Unit 1: Governancein Canada Time:22 hours
This unit is designed to help you learnthe roles and responsibilities of various institutions, structures, and figuresin Canadian governance. You will also learn your own individual role within thecommunity and civic issues. In this unit, you will learn how to apply yourunderstanding of civic structures by writing letters to a government official.You will continue to build your knowledge on governance in Canada and the key rolesand responsibilities needed for a functional government in order to develop anapplicable use of civics in your own life.
Unit 2: Legal Process Time:19 hours
The second unitof this course is designed to help you develop a foundational understanding of Canadian legal processes such as the voting system, electoral processes, therole of candidates, the function of parties, how bills become law, the judicial process, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In accordance, you will also be aware of the three levels of government and how each function plays a crucial role in the bigger picture of the legal processes. You will learn how the system of laws that govern Canada is integrated into society inmany areas and on many levels. Additionally, you will understand how the laws, electoral and judicial processes, and Charter, and applicable to you. By the end of this unit, you will be able to recognize the characteristics of the political spectrum, differentiate between the goals of the main Canadianparties, and be able to identify the steps of the election process from theroles of political parties to their platforms and promises. You will have an understanding of the important aspects of the election process and have aconcept of the Charter and its main outlying sections.
Unit 3: Global Citizen Time:9 hours
This unit isdesigned to help you learn what constitutes as global citizenship, the roles and responsibilities of a global citizen and the necessity for everyone tounderstand and take an active role in this world awareness. You will also learnthe history behind international institutions and establishments such as the Nobel Peace Prize, Non-Government Profitable Organizations, United Nations, and how these organizations do their part in global citizenry and why they are important for the overall cause of the Common Good. By completing assignments, readings and group projects, you will understand the relevance of the concept of being a global citizen and how it is applicable in your everyday life.
