UNIT OVERVIEWS
Unit 1: Everyday Activities
Time: 20 hours
Students will review vocabulary related to everyday activities such as greetings, entertainment, recreation, shopping, and hobbies, to serveas a foundation for the course. They will review the applications of simplepresent tense in various contexts and learn about the verbs “to be” (includingimpersonal expressions: it is noisy), “to have”, “to go”, and “to do”,and basic sentence structure. They will cover parts of speech, proper nouns,possessive nouns, singular and plural regular and irregular high-frequency nouns, pronouns used as a subject of a sentence: I, you, he, she, it, we, and they. Students will learn finalpunctuation, capitalization, infinitives and imperatives, and cardinal,ordinal, asking for clarification, and demonstrative numbers (this/these, that/those). They will learnhow to respond to and form yes or no questions in simple perfect tense. They will have an opportunity to practice using course formats such as discussion boards, homework, external links, videos, assignments, and quizzes.
Unit 2: Jobs
Time: 20 hours
Students will learn about work through a variety of reading,writing, listening and speaking exercises. Students will consider questions such as “What is a good job?” and “Howcan you find a good job?” Students will investigate OSSD requirements and various Canadian institutions in which tostudy programs related to their future career goals. They will develop,reinforce and use skills such as: previewing a text, predicting content,reading and listening for main ideas and details, understanding key words andphrases, using context to understand meaning, using photos/pictures to activate knowledge, reading titles and headings to prepare for reading. Writing and speaking skills will include revising and editing, writing complete sentences about specific topics, andpreparing for a presentation. Students will learn and use new vocabulary related to the theme of work. Students will learn how to use possessive adjectives and pronouns, and apostrophe in contractions and possessive forms(e.g., He’s a doctor.). They willalso learn how to use coordinating conjunctions to join simple sentences andlook at various sentence structures, as well as how to answer WH questions.
Unit 3: Emotions and Laughter
Time: 15 hours
Students will learn about laughter through a variety of reading,writing, listening and speaking exercises. Students will consider questions such as “What makes you laugh?” and“Who makes you laugh?” In the context ofthese questions, students will develop, reinforce and use skills such as:previewing a text, predicting content, reading and listening for main ideas anddetails, reading and recognizing different types of text, listening forsequence words, listening for names and numbers. Writing and speaking skills will include:planning before writing, revising and editing, giving peer feedback, writing paragraphs of explanation, identifying topic sentences of paragraphs, effective pauses and tone of voice in presenting, and using funny stories when presenting. Students will learn and use new vocabulary related to the theme of laughter. Students will learn about various grammar structures such as there is/there are, object pronouns, andthe verb “can” for ability and permission. They will also learn about sentencestructures with “when”, simple past with regular and irregular verbs,comparative and superlative adjectives, and about adverbs that modify adjectives.
Unit 4: Global Studies
Time: 20 hours
Students will learn about long distance through a variety ofreading, writing, listening and speaking exercises. Students will consider questions such as“What makes a culture unique?” and “Why do people immigrate to other countries?” In the context of these questions, students will develop, reinforce and use skills such as: previewinga text, predicting content, reading and listening for main ideas and details, skimming for main ideas, gaining prior knowledge through looking at pictures, headings and captions, listening for problems, listening for directions. Writing and speaking skills will include planning before writing, revising, and editing, using notes to present,maintaining eye contact. Students will learn and use new vocabulary related tothe theme of culture. A focus on Canadian contexts will be present and students will investigate the history of Canadian culture. Students will learn more about adjectives and verbs, and learn about transitional phrases, time orderwords, and prepositions. They will learn how to identify main ideas and write aneffective summary.
Unit 5: Vacations
Time: 16 hours
Students will learn about vacation through a variety of reading,writing, listening and speaking exercises. Students will consider questions such as “Why is vacation important?”and “What is the best kind of vacation?” In the context of these questions, students will develop, reinforce anduse skills such as: previewing a text, predicting content, reading and listening for main ideas and details, interpreting charts, graph and tables,comparing information in different readings, listening for details, recognizing reduced forms in speech. Writing and speaking skills will include planning before writing, revising and editing,using topic sentences, supporting sentences, and concluding sentences. Students will learn and use new vocabulary related to the theme of vacation. They will learn about simple future tense,the order of descriptive adjectives, and adverbs of frequency.
Unit 6: Sports
Time: 15 hours
Students will learn aboutsports through a variety of reading, writing, listening, and speakingexercises. Students will consider questions such as “Why do we playsports?” and “The History of Football [Soccer]”. In the context of these questions, you will develop, reinforce and use skills such as: previewing a text, predicting content, reading and listening for main ideas and details, making inferences,skimming the text, listening for numbers. Writing and speaking skillswill include planning before writing, preparing for a presentation, revising,and editing, and forming proper paragraphs. Students will learn and use new vocabulary related to the theme of sports. Students will learn about the present progressiveand adjectives: some, any, every, all, many, much, number, amount, etc.
Unit 7: Culminating Task
Time: 3 hours
Students will create a literacy portfolio inwhich they edit and revise previously submitted assignments or activities.Students will also submit tasks from their notebooks that are completed throughout the length of the course and reflect on how all of their portfolio pieces demonstrate growth in their language abilities and what strategies theycan use moving forward in their studies.
